MARTHA CHAVES with Lisa Baker and Jacob Samuel @ Yuk Yuk's Calgary Comedy Club| Martha Chaves is a busy comic. Her infectious, candid style, her captivating stage presence, and her gift to relate to a wide range of audiences grant her numerous presentations at clubs, colleges, fundraisers, corporate functions and comedy festivals. Martha is a veteran of multiple Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival, and of the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. She has also appeared in the Halifax, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Boston Comedy Festivals, and in the “Marshalls’ Women of Comedy,” in NYC. In Spanish, she’s performed in the Festival Del Humor de Caracol, in Bogotá, Colombia. Her versatile material mixed with her fluency in 4 languages makes her an asset to perform for an array of fascinating audiences. For example, the Canadian Peacekeeping Troops (in Alert, Egypt, Israel, and Afghanistan) and The Nobel Women’s Initiative, a delegation of women led by Nobel Peace Prize winners (in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala). In 2015, Martha warmed up 43,000 people for the 2015 Pan Am Games - Opening Ceremony and in 2016, she hosted the ACTRA Awards, in Toronto. Her TV credits include two national comedy specials: COMICS! on CBC, and Something About Martha on CTV and The Comedy Network, plus her TV appearances on Just for Laughs, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, to mention a few. Martha is a regular on CBC Radio's "Laugh Out Loud,", "The Debaters," and "Because of News." Her witty and poignant one-woman show, “In Times of Trouble,” was featured in The SOLO Festival of One-Person Shows, (May 2015) and in ALUNA Theatre’s CAMINOS Festival (November 2015). In 2016, she was invited to perform it in the SOLOCOM Festival in New York City's PIT Theatre. In May 2017, the SOLO Festival of One-Person Shows launched “A Rebel Without a Pause,” Martha’s autobiographical piece about becoming a Refugee in Canada, and finding her "rebel” voice as a Latin-Canadian, doing comedy in a second language. "The Grande Dame of Canadian Comedy is without a doubt – Martha Chaves. Her wit is infectious; her style is delightful and when you work with her – you have assured professionalism. Martha has always made me laugh out loud, and she is a genuine asset to Canadian comedy" ~Tracy Rideout, Producer CBC Radio - Laugh Out Loud Testimonials "We loved her performance. She (Martha Chaves) pegged the personality of some of our participants perfectly, engaged the audience, was easy going and flexible. We know our delegates like our comedian when they are retelling the jokes over the next couple of days, and they did indeed do that. Thanks so much for being so easy to work with." -Sherry S, Norcat (Sudbury) "Egale Canada was thrilled when Martha Chaves was available to host our IDENTITY Gala on May 24, 2018. Being familiar with Martha through her work with the CBC, we expected that she would bring to the event her usual high level of comedy and personality to a diverse Gala audience – which included the Prime Minister of Canada, The Hon. Justin P.J. Trudeau. However, Martha exceeded our expectations in every way! She was the perfect addition: fun and funny, simply a hit with the Gala crowd. Her interaction with the audience – and even conversing directly with the Prime Minister from the stage – brought many non-stop laughs and helped make the evening a resounding success. Working with Martha was a breeze. She was extremely accommodating, professional, prompt and a pleasure to deal with – exactly what we were looking for. Thank you, Martha!" Lisa Baker Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Lisa developed a sharp wit and sense of humor that Newfoundlanders are known for. After starting a professional stand-up career on the island, she moved to Alberta, as Newfies tend to do, and worked her way through various industrial jobs, eventually settling on a trade. Lisa’s diverse background (single parent, tradesperson, university educated, proud Newfoundlander) has inspired her material and resulted in an eclectic collection of jokes that resonate with audiences all throughout Canada. Lisa’s humor can definitely lean towards blue; however, she can navigate through events that call for clean material as easily as she can work an audience at an uncensored show. She has opened for Rob Schneider, Tom Green, and Paul Reiser; has been featured on CBC's LOL program, and will be featured at the YYComedy Festival in Calgary in the fall of 2017 on the Prairie All Stars Show. Lisa is currently traveling all over Western Canada, leaving audiences in stitches with her take on living and working in Alberta, parenting, and relationships, all while rocking that Newfoundland charm that Canadians know and love. Keep an eye out for Lisa in the future; this comic is definitely going places!
