The Event Pictured, Fallen, V, and Past @ Window Galleries (across from Max Bell Theatre in Arts Commons), Arts Commons | Artist Reception: Happenings 10 on the Mezzanine Level of Arts Commons on Monday, November 27 from 6-9pm Arts Commons is happy to welcome four artists to the Window Galleries this September. A group exhibition about how the feminine image manifests in nature. In these four new works, these artists explore how the act of removing or editing the human form gives images power. These exhibits feature artists Chloe Kinsella, Haley Craw, Natalie Lauchlan, and Pamela Norrish. The root of The Event Pictured is displacement. Displacement of humans as they interrupt the landscape that they have been destroying. Drapery is a cloak over the obstructed human form, casting Kinsella's figure as an ambiguous object attempting to become one with the landscape. Despite being shrouded in natural textiles, the drapery and forms stand quite separate from their environment. This revolves around human appropriation of natural imagery as well as intervention into wild spaces. Fallen exhibits a wine stained sheet in reference to thr shroud of Turin, the proposed burial shroud of Jesus. The bodily trace of an absent woman imprinted on a bed sheet defies this religious icon. The red residue is represented through her intimate garments, confronting shame enforced by values of purity and modesty. The red wine saturates the white sheets without hesitation, asserting its presence and embracing the mark left by an impure woman. V documents a three hour endurance performance, performed at Espace Cercle Carré in Montreal. A reflection inwards to oneself and a projection outwards to the world. A cooperation between cyclical and stagnant, the co-emergence of meaning; a release and a capture. A haunting and a goodbye. The display Past consists of three altered photographs, an altered t-shirt, and a handmade custom box for the t-shirt. After altering these photographs, they became new again and now represent a second moment in time. The imagery is Norrish's personal reflection on t-shirts that one time represented an identity, a movement, an election, or a period of time. The box is custom made to hold the t-shirt to imply a significance to the t-shirt as a memento of the past. Artist Biographies Chloe Kinsella is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Calgary. Chloe attended the University of Calgary and graduated in 2015 with an honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her art deals with women's interaction with nature, working in textile design, printmaking, performance and photography, often combined in one piece. “I want my work to function as different iterations in different spaces of time,” said Chloe when describing her work. A large portion of her practice is to immerse herself in nature and gather inspiration and natural artifacts, creating both spontaneously and reflectively. Chloe draws attention to issues of environmental intervention and eco-feminism in a nuanced way. Haley Craw was included in the Feminist Art Conference 2015 exhibition in Toronto, as well as FemmeWave and TRUCK Contemporary Calgary. Her work has been featured in Filling Station Magazine, Nailed Magazine, and The Fem Literary Magazine. Natalie Lauchlan is a daughter. She is an emerging artist from Alberta, where her mind still goes to wonder the forests and mountains, no matter where her body is. She collects fragments of text that come to arrange themselves in her memory. She reads the tenderness of objects and transcribes the poetics of space. Exploring the ephemeral, she is the ghost haunting all her memories. Pamela Norrish studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design, Calgary including one year abroad at the New York Studio Program at Parsons The New School, New York City, and the Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto. Norrish has attended artist residencies at The Banff Centre for the Arts, Banff, the Ledge Gallery, Calgary, Mentoring Artist’s for Women’s Art(MAWA), Winnipeg, and Artscape Gibraltar Point, Toronto.
