A Registered Historic Resource, the Pumphouse Theatres building was originally constructed as Water Pumping Station No. 2, serving Calgary from 1913 to 1967. Saved from demolition in 1968, it was restored and equipped with two fully functioning theatres: Joyce Doolittle Theatre and Victor Mitchell Theatre. The pump and original brickwork have been preserved and are the only remaining such equipment in North America. That makes the Pumphouse extra unique. In any given season, the Pumphouse provides subsidized theatre rental space for more than 15 unique arts organizations, which in turn produce an average of 40 productions. This translates to approximately 400 performances attended by over 50,000 patrons each year (nearly 5 percent of the Calgary population!).
